IT was on December 30, 2019 when we had Ma. Victoria Carpio-Bernido and Chris Bernido as guest in Savage Mind, a bookshop and cultural hub in Naga City. The pandemic was some two months away. It was Rizal Day and Kristian Sendon Cordero, the man behind the other SM, as we fondly labels the place, found out through another friend that the Bernidos were in the old city for the Christmas break.

The Asian Institute of Management (AIM) TeaM Energy Center for Bridging Leadership (TEC-BL) invited Ramon Magsaysay Awardees Dr. Christopher “Chris” Bernido and Dr. Ma. Victoria “Marivic” Carpio-Bernido to speak before the fellows of the Future Bridging Leaders Program (FBLP) 3 last July 27, 2020. FBLP 3 is the Institute’s flagship, yearlong leadership development program for the Filipino youth.

The Bernido couple, both holders of Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics, developed the Dynamic Learning Program (DLP) – a teaching pedagogy that promotes context-specific and activity-based independent learning among students. First implemented in Jagna, Bohol through the Central Visayan Institute Foundation (CVIF) in 2002, this learning method has dramatically shifted the educational landscape in the rural municipality and in more than 200 schools where it is now being carried out

AMID THE GRIM education scenario in the Philippines, a bright light shines from the remote town of Jagna in Bohol.

There, husband and wife Christopher Bernido and Ma. Victoria Carpio-Bernido, both physicists, introduced a way of

teaching and learning that has produced amazing results. More than a decade ago, they left their academic careers at the University of the Philippines (UP) and went back to a rural setting to run a struggling school and help students achieve their academic potentials.

Their efforts catapulted them to national and international attention and became a source of inspiration. The Bernidos were among seven awardees honored yesterday by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation in ceremonies at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

A Catholic priest and his students praised the work of Christopher Bernido and his wife Maria Victoria Carpio-Bernido who were awarded the 2010 Ramon Magsaysay Award they are being given for their work in science and education for poor students. “They deserve the award,” said Claretian missionary Father James Castro, director of Claret School of Zamboanga City. The priest said the couple did “great work in the field of education,” using an innovative method that helps students and teachers. “It makes students responsible and teachers more dedicated,” Father Castro said. Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation announced Aug. 2 that Christopher and Maria Victoria have been selected among six recipients of this year’s awards dubbed “Asia’s Nobel Prize.”
